Education

PhD, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Nottingham, Nottingham, UK , July 1998

Thesis:          Evaluation of neural learning in a MLP NN for an acoustic-to-articulatory mapping problem using different training pattern vector characteristics

BSc, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Yıldız Teknik University, İstanbul, Turkey, February 1991

Project:        An application of ultrasonic transducers for distant measurement.

Research Interests

Machine Learning, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Multimodal HCI, Affective Computing,  Intelligent Systems,  Implementation of Artificial Intelligence on Embedded Systems, The application of computational intelligence to power systems, Economical and Environmental Power Dispatch using Artificial Intelligence.

In general my main research activities have addressed to the soft computing techniques such as artificial neural networks, genetic algorithm, particle swarm  and taboo search to diverse application areas such as speech and image processing.

During the period I have also conducted researches in order to improve performance of neural classifiers, under heavily skewed multi-dimensional training data

I was the principal investigator for a project on affective computing which aimed to detect the emotional state of a user using speech and facial image. The title of the project was “Determination and Fusion of Bimodal Biometric Parameters From Speech Signal and Face Image to Improve Human-Computer Interaction”. The project was funded by TUBITAK.

Currently I am working on Implementation of Signal Processing and Pattern Recognition Techniques on Embedded Systems and we are carrying out a project with the title “Design of a Synthesiser Interface for efficient and modular implementation of signal processing and classifier algorithms  on Field Programmable Gate Arrays” which is supported by TUBITAK

Research Experience

Academic Visitor                                                 June 2006-September 2006

Electronics and Computer Science,  Southampton University and

Computer Science,  University College of London (UCL)

A postdoctoral  visit to Machine Learning Group  (ISIS) leading by Prof. John Shawe Taylor  of Southampton University. The first part of  research has been carried out in  ISIS group within the department of Electronics and Computer Science, Southampton University. The last part of research has been completed at Computer Science of  University College of London

Assistant Professor                                             June 1999- present

Electrical-Electronics Engineering Department, Niğde University

PhD Student                                                         October 1994- October 1998

Electrical Engineering, Nottingham University Faculty of Engineering

My research addressed to the problem of efficient parameter extraction for an articulatory speech synthesizer. The effect of statistical characteristics of training data on the performance of neural estimator  is investigated and a modification scheme was proposed which resulted in an improved performance of MLP neural network estimation.
